The detector consisted of three tanks of T017000100020 BC-517S mineral-oil-based scintillator, each tank T017000100021 measuring 10 cm x 100 cm x 107 cm, oriented T017000100022 perpendicular to the beam. Each tank was subdivided T017000100023 into ten optically isolated cells and each cell was T017000100024 viewed by phototubes at both ends. T017000100025 Thin (0.3 cm) planes of plastic scintillator were used T017000100026 to tag and reject charged particles produced by T017000100027 charge-exchange scattering along the flight path. T017000100028 CORRECTION Background spectra, suitably normalized and with T017000100029 energy-loss corrections, were subtracted from the T017000100030 16O ice target (p,n) spectra. Similar procedures were T017000100031 carried out for the 18O ice target spectra. T017000100032 The most significant background contributions to the T017000100033 (p,n) spectra from the 16O ice target were 18O(p,n)18FT017000100034 transitions from the isotopic mixture in the target, T017000100035 12C(p,n)12N transitions from the Mylar foil target T017000100036 windows and from oil condensed on these foils, and T017000100037 Cu(p,n)Zn transitions from beam halo scattering on T017000100038 the plate surrounding the disk of ice.
