To detect the alpha particles escaping S020900100042 from the PSSDs, eight side silicon detectors (SSDs) S020900100043 were mounted perpendicular to the surface of PSSDs in S020900100044 an open box geometry. The total detection efficiency S020900100045 of the detector array was measured to be 72%. In S020900100046 order to distinguish the alpha-decay events from the S020900100047 implantation ones, two multiwire proportional S020900100048 counters were mounted upstream from the PSSDs.
