O171500100004 AUTHOR (R.Palit, P.Adrich, T.Aumann, K.Boretzky, B.V.Carlson, O171500100005 D.Cortina, U.Datta Pramanik, Th.W.Elze, H.Emling, O171500100006 H.Geissel, M.Hellstroem, K.L.Jones, J.V.Kratz, O171500100007 R.Kulessa, Y.Leifels, A.Leistenschneider, O171500100008 G.Muenzenberg, C.Nociforo, P.Reiter, H.Simon, O171500100009 K.Suemmerer, W.Walus) O171500100010 REFERENCE (J,PR/C,68,034318,2003) O171500100011 INSTITUTE (2GERFRK) O171500100012 (3POLUJK) O171500100013 (2GERGSI) O171500100014 (2GERMNZ) Institut fuer Kernchemie O171500100015 (3BZLCTA) O171500100016 (2GERKLN) O171500100017 (2GERTHD) O171500100018 INC-SPECT The secondary beam containing Be-11 ions with a O171500100019 kinetic energy of 520 MeV/nucleon was produced in O171500100020 fragmentation reactions of a primary Ar-40 beam O171500100021 delivered by the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS at GSI. The O171500100022 720 MeV/nucleon Ar-40 beam with an intensity of about O171500100023 10E+10 ion per second impinged on a beryllium O171500100024 production target of 5 g/cm**2 thickness. O171500100025 SAMPLE The secondary targets, natural carbon target and O171500100026 natural lead target, 0.573 g/cm**2 and 1.820 g/cm**2 O171500100027 thicknesses, respectively were used. O171500100028 FACILITY (SYNCH,2GERGSI) O171500100029 (FRS,2GERGSI) Fragments were selected according to O171500100030 magnetic rigidity by the fragment separator. O171500100031 METHOD (COINC) Be-10 fragments, neutrons and gamma rays have O171500100032 been detected in coincidence. O171500100033 (EXTB) O171500100034 (TOF) O171500100035 DETECTOR (SCIN) Two thin plastic scintillation detectors were O171500100036 used for determination the mass-to-charge ratio O171500100037 obtained from a time-of-flight measurement. O171500100038 (PS) The position of the incoming particles on the O171500100039 target was measured by a position-sensitive Si pin- O171500100040 diode. O171500100041 (NAICR) The gamma rays emitted from excited Be-10 O171500100042 fragments were detected by the 4-pi Crystal Ball O171500100043 spectrometer, consisting of 160 NaI detectors. Behind O171500100044 the target, the fragments were deflected by a large- O171500100045 gap dippole magnet ALADIN. O171500100046 The neutron were detected in the LAND neutron detector O171500100047 having an active area of 2*2 m**2 and consisting of 200O171500100048 individual modules. There individual 10 cm thick O171500100049 detector modules have a sandwichlike structure O171500100050 (alternating layers of 5 mm iron converter and 5 mm O171500100051 plastic scintillator). The total thickness of the O171500100052 detector of 1 m(50% iron, 50% plastic) provides a O171500100053 detection efficiency of 94% for one single neutron O171500100054 with kinetic energies around 500 MeV. O171500100055 COMMENT *By authors*.Since the present experiment detects O171500100056 coincidences between the Be-10 fragment and one neutronO171500100057 in the forward direction, only inelastic excitation of O171500100058 the projectile,i.e. processes electromagnetic O171500100059 dissociation or Coulomb breakup and nuclear inelastic O171500100060 scattering into the resonant or nonresonant continuum O171500100061 contribute to the measured cross section.
