O078700100015 SAMPLE In a first series of measurements a tantalum oxide O078700100016 target of 500 mug/cm2 evaporated on a carbon backing O078700100017 was used for proton energies from 8.4 to 12.2 MeV. O078700100018 Above this energy, gamma rays resulting from reactions O078700100019 with the Ta nuclei become too intense. The target O078700100020 stability was verified by regular measurements at a O078700100021 proton energy of 10 MeV. No deterioration of the O078700100022 target during proton irradiation was observed. In a O078700100023 second series three different self-supporting collodionO078700100024 foils (chemical composition C12+H16+N4+O18) of O078700100025 thickness 0.7-3.5 mg/cm2 were used for measurements O078700100026 with proton energies ranging from 8.6 to 20 MeV. WithO078700100027 these targets a typical loss of the oxygen content of O078700100028 50% in 12 hours irradiation with 0.5 nA proton beams O078700100029 was observed. The carbon content in both target O078700100030 materials allowed the authors to obtain also O078700100031 gamma-angular distributions for the 4.44 MeV transitionO078700100032 in 12C from Ep=8.4 MeV up to an energy, where the 4.44 O078700100033 MeV gamma-ray production from 16O(p,p+alpha+gamma)12C O078700100034 stays negligible compared to the production of this O078700100035 gamma-ray from inelastic proton scattering on 12C. O078700100036 DETECTOR (HPGE,BGO) The induced gamma rays were detected by a O078700100037 set of eight high efficiency HP-Ge detectors with BGO O078700100038 shielding for Compton suppression from the EUROGAM O078700100039 phase I setup.
