M067600100005 CRITIQUE The 188Os data published differ from the same data M067600100006 published in NP/A,778,561,2005: from comparison of M067600100007 this ENTRY (M0676) article Fig. 4c with that (M0675) M067600100008 article Fig. 1 it looks like that one data line (EN M067600100009 = 9.93, SIGMA = 60.2, ERR = 4.8, see SUBENT M067600100010 M0675002) was omitted or missed (see SUBENT M067600100011 M0676004). M067600100026 INC-SOURCE (MPH,LCS) Tunable quasimonochromatic photon beam M067600100027 generated by Laser Compton scattering (LCS) of laser M067600100028 photons. The typical energy resolution was 10 % in M067600100029 FWHM. M067600100030 DETECTOR (PROPC) 3He proportional counters (EURISYS MESURES M067600100031 96NH45). M067600100032 METHOD (RINGR) 16 3He proportional counters embedded in a M067600100033 polyethylene moderator were used. Two sets of eight M067600100034 counters were placed in double concentric (inner and M067600100035 outer) rings at 7 and 10 cm from the beam axis. Time M067600100036 correlations between neutron signal and the laser M067600100037 pulse were measured to estimate the number of M067600100038 neutrons that arrived randomly at the 3He detector. M067600100039 SAMPLE Metallic powders of 1246 mg 186W, 996 mg 187Re, and M067600100040 693 mg 188Os enriched to 99.79, 99.52 and 94.99 %, M067600100041 respectively, were pressed to self-supporting M067600100042 tablets with a diameter of 8 mm. The 188Os powder M067600100043 included major contaminants of 189Os (2.55 %), 190Os M067600100044 (1.27 %) and 192Os (0.97 %). M067600100045 ANALYSIS Direct measurement. M067600100046 COMMENT Cross sections of the 186W,187Re,188Os(g,n) reactions M067600100047 were measured using quasimonochromatic photon beams M067600100048 from laser Compton scattering with average energies M067600100049 from 7.3 to 10.9 Mev. The results are compared with M067600100050 the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical M067600100051 calculation using four different sets of input M067600100052 parameters. In addition, the inverse neutron capture M067600100053 cross sections were evaluated by constraining the M067600100054 model parameters, especially E1 strength function, M067600100055 on the basis of the experimental data. The present M067600100056 experiment helps to further constrain the correction M067600100057 factor F-sigma for the neutron capture on the 9.75 M067600100058 keV state on 187Os. Implications of Fsigma for Re-Os M067600100059 cosmochronology are discussed with a focus on the M067600100060 uncertainty in the estimate the age of a galaxy.
