M066200100004 AUTHOR (A.Leistenschneider,T.Aumann,K.Boretzky,D.Cortina, M066200100005 J.Cub,U.Datta Pramanik,W.Dostal,Th.W.Elze,H.Emling, M066200100006 H.Geissel,A.Grunschloss,M.Hellstr,R.Holzmann, M066200100007 S.Ilievski,N.Iwasa,M.Kaspar,A.Kleinbohl,J.V.Kratz, M066200100008 R.Kulessa,Y.Leifels,E.Lubkiewicz,G.Munzenberg, M066200100009 P.Reiter,M.Rejmund,C.Scheidenberger,C.Schlegel, M066200100010 H.Simon,J.Stroth,K.Summerer,E.Wajda,W.Walus,S.Wan) M066200100011 INSTITUTE (2GERFRK,2GERGSI,2GERMNZ,2GERTHD,3POLIFJ) M066200100012 REFERENCE (J,PRL,86,5442,2001) M066200100013 FACILITY (SYNCH,2GERGSI) Synchrotron SIS at CSI, Darmstadt. M066200100014 INC-SOURCE (COULX) Electromagnetic excitation of oxygen in M066200100015 heavy-ion (18O + 208Pb) collisions. To disentangle M066200100016 electromagnetic excitation from nuclear interaction M066200100017 processes the fragment mass measured with good M066200100018 resolution was compared to the number of neutrons M066200100019 emitted in the forward direction. M066200100020 DETECTOR (BF3) High efficiency (~ 90 %) LAND neutron detector. M066200100021 METHOD (EXTB) Direct measurement of photoneutrons: in the M066200100022 case of electromagnetic excitation, the difference M066200100023 in mass number between the projectile and fragment M066200100024 equals the number of neutrons. M066200100025 SAMPLE The stable (18O) and unstable (20,22O) oxygen nuclei. M066200100026 ANALYSIS Reaction cross section determination using the M066200100027 measurements of numbers of neutrons from M066200100028 electromagnetic excitation into continuum (from M066200100029 fragment mass measurement) and of numbers of M066200100030 gamma-quanta (4pi Crystall Ball spectrometer, M066200100031 consisting of 160 NaI detectors). M066200100032 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-S) Statistical errors. M066200100033 COMMENT The dipole responce of stable and unstable M066200100034 neutron-rich oxygen nuclei of masses A = 17 to A = M066200100035 22 has been investigated experimentally utilizing M066200100036 electromagnetic excitation in heavy-ion collisions M066200100037 at beam energies about 600 MeV/nucleon. A M066200100038 kinematically complete measurement of the neutron M066200100039 decay channel in inelastic scattering of the M066200100040 secondary beam projectiles from Pb target was M066200100041 performed. Differential electromagnetic excitation M066200100042 cross sections dsig/de were derived up to 30 MeV M066200100043 excitation energy. In contrast to stable nuclei, the M066200100044 deduced dipole strength distribution appears to be M066200100045 strongly fragmented and systematically exhibits a M066200100046 considerable fraction of low-lying strength.
