M063800100026 COMMENT Total photofission cross sections for 237-Np, 233-U, M063800100027 235-U, 238-U, 232-Th, and nat-Pb have been measured M063800100028 simultaneously, using tagged photons in the energy M063800100029 range Eg = 0.17 - 3.84 GeV in Hall B at Jefferson M063800100030 lab. The fission fragments were detected using M063800100031 parallel-plate avalanche detectors. Results show M063800100032 that, of these nuclei, 237-Np has the largest M063800100033 photofission cross section per nucleon, and that the M063800100034 photofission cross section for 238-U relative to M063800100035 that for 237-Np is about 80 % over the entire energy M063800100036 range. The relative photofission cross sections per M063800100037 nucleon increase with the fissility parameter M063800100038 Z**2/A, approaching an apparent asymptote at the M063800100039 Z**2/A value for 237-Np, and they do not depend M063800100040 strongly on the incident photon energy over this M063800100041 entire energy range. These results, together with a M063800100042 comparison of the 237-Np photofission cross section M063800100043 cross section per nucleon with total photoabsorption M063800100044 data, indicate that the photofission probability for M063800100045 237-np is almost unity. If we make this assumption, M063800100046 we observe a significant shadowing of the interior M063800100047 nucleons starting below 1.5 GeV, so that the M063800100048 photoabsorption cross section decreases by 20 % near M063800100049 4 GeV.
