M063200100031 COMMENT The photodisintegration of deuterium with linearly M063200100032 polarized light has been measured in the energy range M063200100033 of 110 - 315 MeV. The results of five independent M063200100034 measurements using three detector systems, two liquid M063200100035 target geometrics, and two photon energy distribution M063200100036 end-points are presented. These data are combined M063200100037 into one average data set with a systematic M063200100038 uncertainty of +- 5 %. These statistical precision of M063200100039 this combined data set, coupled with the sensitivity M063200100040 to the strength of the short range tensor interaction M063200100041 observed in the parallel-perpendicular cross section M063200100042 difference, makes this an attractive reaction for M063200100043 investigating aspects of the nn interaction. To do M063200100044 this reliably requires a complete, systematic M063200100045 description of the reaction through the delta region. M063200100046 Recent nn-ndelta coupled-channel calculations which M063200100047 include fully retarded pion potentials are compared M063200100048 with multipole fits to the data. These calculations M063200100049 cannot reproduce the energy and angle dependence of M063200100050 the data. The character of the disagreement that the M063200100051 remaining problems may lie with the treatment of the M063200100052 delta. Because of experimental limitations, it has M063200100053 been customary to present the polarization- M063200100054 independent cross section (DA) data and beam M063200100055 asymmetry (POL/DA,,ASY/PP) data rather than the M063200100056 polarization-dependent cross section (the numerator M063200100057 of the asymmetry) data.
