In fact, M059000100023 while the hadronic events are more largely M059000100024 distributed in angle, the electromagnetic event M059000100025 distribution is strongly peaked in the forward M059000100026 direction and therefore can be suppressed by using M059000100027 a high efficiency electromagnetic shower detector M059000100028 as a veto counter. M059000100029 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-S) Statistical errors only. M059000100041 COMMENT The total photoabsorption cross sections for 7Li, C, M059000100042 Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb have been measured in the energy M059000100043 range 300 - 1200 MeV at Frascati with the jet-target M059000100044 tagged photon beam. A 4pi NaI crystal detector and a M059000100045 lead-glass shower counter were used, respectively, to M059000100046 measure hadronic events and to reject the M059000100047 electromagnetic background. Data above 600 MeV M059000100048 clearly indicate a broadening of higher nucleon M059000100049 resonance peaks in nuclei and a reduction of the M059000100050 absolute value of the cross section per nucleon M059000100051 with the respect to free-nucleon case. M059000100052 This large broadening suggests a strong influence of M059000100053 the nuclear medium in the resonance propagation and M059000100054 interaction, while the systematic reduction of the M059000100055 measured cross sections might Be due to a depletion M059000100056 of the resonance excitation strength and to the onset M059000100057 of the shadowing effect around 1 GeV. Moreover, M059000100058 systematic study carried out indicates that also the M059000100059 delta-resonance excitation parameters are not the M059000100060 same for all nuclei, being its mass and width M059000100061 increasing with the nuclear density.
