M058100100020 The formalism for the interpretation of these cross M058100100021 sections in terms of the total photoabsorpion cross M058100100022 section and its partitioning into E1 and E2 parts was M058100100023 presented. For carbon, the excellent agreement has M058100100024 been found between the photoabsorption deduced from M058100100025 the scattering and previous direct measurements. The M058100100026 fore-to-aft asymmetries in the cross sections indicateM058100100027 that the bulk of E2 strength is about 50 MeV and not M058100100028 between 30 and 45 MeV, as previously thought. For M058100100029 calcium, the scattering data indicate that the M058100100030 integrated photoabsorption cross sections per nucleon M058100100031 are closer to the nearly constant value reported for M058100100032 A > 100 than previously thought. No compact E2 M058100100033 strenght exhausting more than 0.5 classical sums was M058100100034 found below 50 MeV, although weaker or less compact M058100100035 strength cannot be ruled out.
