With the beam on the target the gas M057900100013 temperature was about 34 K and the pressure was M057900100014 0.66 mpA. M057900100015 METHOD (REC,MAGFR) Detecting of the recoiling A = 3 nuclei M057900100016 using 900 MeV/C magnetic spectrometer. M057900100017 DETECTOR (MWDC) Two multiwire gas proportional counters were M057900100018 used. The thickness of each counter was 14.7 mg/cm2. M057900100019 The active area of each counter was 76 x 36 cm, they M057900100020 had uniform gain over the central 66 x 20 cm region. M057900100021 ANALYSIS The measured particle momentum spectra were converted M057900100022 to photodisintegration cross sections as a function M057900100023 of real or virtual photon energy by dividing by the M057900100024 appropriate Jacobians and the corresponding M057900100025 calculated photon spectrum. M057900100026 CORRECTION The measured particle yields were corrected for M057900100027 events lost due to the rate limitation of the data M057900100028 acquisitions ystem and for the drift chamber M057900100029 inefficiency. M057900100030 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-S) Statistical errors. M057900100031 (ERR-SYS) Systematic uncertainty is about 9%. M057900100032 COMMENT Measurement of the differential cross sections for the M057900100033 4He(gamma,n)3He and 4He(gamma,p)3H reactions have M057900100034 been performed for photon energies in the 100 - 360 M057900100035 MeV region. Results were obtained for nucleon M057900100036 center-of-mass angles close to 60, 90, and 120 degree M057900100037 by detecting the recoiling nuclei with a magnetic M057900100038 spectrometer. Both (gamma,p) and (gamma,n) cross M057900100039 sections are forward peaked and fall rapidly as a M057900100040 function of photon energy. The (gamma,p) to (gamma,n) M057900100041 cross section ratio is in the range 0.7 - 1.3 at each M057900100042 angle and tends to increase with photon energy. The M057900100043 data were compared with a calculation by Gari and M057900100044 Hebach which includes meson exchange contributions. M057900100045 The magnitude and energy dependence of the cross M057900100046 sections are approximately reproduced, but the theory M057900100047 fails to describe the angular dependence and the M057900100048 cross section ratios.
