M052200100022 COMMENT The Compton scattering cross section on the proton has M052200100023 been measured at laboratory angles 90 degree and 135 M052200100024 degree using tagged photons in the energy range 70 - M052200100025 100 MeV and simultaneously using untagged photons in M052200100026 the range 100 - 148 MeV. With the aid of dispersion M052200100027 relations, these cross sections were used to extract M052200100028 the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, alpha and M052200100029 beta respectively, of the proton. It was obtained M052200100030 that alpha + beta = 15.0 ((2.9), (1.1), (0.4)) x M052200100031 10**(-4) fermi**(-3), in agreement with a M052200100032 model-independent dispersion sum rule, and alpha - M052200100033 beta = 10.8 ((1.1), (1.4), 1.0)) x 10**(-4) M052200100034 fermi**(-3), where the errors shown are statistical, M052200100035 systematic, and model-dependent, respectively.
