M049300100013 ANALYSIS Direct measurements of cross section values for M049300100014 coincidence counts between the tagged electrons from M049300100015 microtron and the scattering gamma-quanta detector. M049300100016 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-S) The statistical errors are presented only. M049300100017 (ERR-SYS,,10.) The systematic uncertainties were M049300100018 estimated to be probably less than 10%. For the M049300100019 smallest measured cross sections (i.e., equal to or M049300100020 less than 0.03 mb/sr) there are additional M049300100021 uncertainties caused by the difficulty of separating M049300100022 reliably the elastic scattering peak from the M049300100023 background in the gamma-ray spectrum measured with M049300100024 the NaI photon detector. The data points below 9.7 M049300100025 MeV for Pb-208 and below 10 MeV for enriched Pb-206 M049300100026 target might, therefore, have larger systematic M049300100027 errors. M049300100028 CORRECTION Corrections for geometric factors and for the atomic M049300100029 absorption of photons in the targets may have M049300100030 contributed an uncertainty of 5% or less. M049300100031 COMMENT The elastic photon scattering cross sections of M049300100032 Pb-208 and Pb-206 were measured at 90 and 135 degr. M049300100033 in the energy range from 9.5 to 12 MeV with a tagged M049300100034 photon beam whose energy spread was about 125 keV M049300100035 The Pb-206 cross section rises monotonically with M049300100036 energy, and is consistent with a total photon M049300100037 interaction cross section which has a Lorentzian M049300100038 energy dependence with a peak cross section of 650 M049300100039 mb at 13.6 MeV and a width about 3.8 MeV. The Pb-208 M049300100040 scattering cross section is larger and has some M049300100041 rapid variations with energy; there is a narrow M049300100042 extra peak near 10.04 MeV and there are abrupt M049300100043 increases in the cross section just below 10.6 and M049300100044 11.3 MeV. The relative scattering observed at the M049300100045 two angles indicates that all of the scattering, M049300100046 including the rapid variations with energy, is M049300100047 dominated by dipole interactions.
