M037200100013 METHOD (EXTB,SITA) The ratio of photon numbers N0(e) and N(e) M037200100014 was obtained by measuring the number of Compton M037200100015 electrons from the target of the main spectrometer M037200100016 without and with the absorber in the beam. The number M037200100017 of Compton electrons was determined by subtracting M037200100018 the number of pair positrons, which was measured M037200100019 separately with reversed magnetic fields, from the M037200100020 measured number of negatons. The total M037200100045 attenuation cross section (sig-tot) as a function of M037200100046 the photon energy e was deduced from the absorption M037200100047 law: N(e) = N0(e) exp(-(N-nucl))(sig-tot)(e), where M037200100048 N0 and N are the numbers of photons in a certain M037200100049 energy bin without and with attenuation, M037200100050 respectively, and (N-nucl) is the number of nuclei M037200100051 per cm**2 in the absorber. The non-nuclear cross M037200100052 section (sig-el) was calculated. This cross section M037200100053 is the sum of: M037200100054 - atomic photoeffect cross section (negligible for M037200100055 the low-z elements); M037200100056 - Compton scattering cross section: Klein-Nishina M037200100057 formula with radiative corrections include double M037200100058 Compton effect; M037200100059 - cross section of pair production in the field of M037200100060 the nucleus; M037200100061 - cross section of pair production in the field of M037200100062 the electron (triplet production). M037200100063 In summary it was estimated that the error of the sum M037200100064 of all non-nuclear cross sections be smaller than 0.1 M037200100065 percent for the element and energy ranges considered. M037200100066 1En resolution 0.7 percent. M037200100067 2En resolution 1.1 percent. M037200100068 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) Mean-root-square errors are given. M037200100069 CORRECTION Several corrections were made for: M037200100070 - the errors due to counting statistics for two M037200100071 Compton spectrometers have been treated separately; M037200100072 - systematic errors due to uncertainties in the M037200100073 attenuator properties; M037200100074 - systematic errors that arise from uncertainties in M037200100075 the correction for dead time losses in the counter M037200100076 systems of the spectrometers; M037200100077 - systematic errors that arise from non-ideal M037200100078 geometry; M037200100079 - an error on spectrometer energy calibration; M037200100080 - energy fluctuations of the electrons passing the M037200100081 energy slits of the detecting systems; M037200100082 - incomplete knowledge of the non-nuclear cross M037200100083 sections. M037200100084 COMMENT Absolute nuclear photon absorption cross sections have M037200100085 been measured for the elements Li, be, C, O, Si, and M037200100086 Ca from 10 MeV up to photon energies beyond the meson M037200100087 production threshold. Magnetic Compton spectrometers M037200100088 and a Bremsstrahlung spectrum with fixed end-point M037200100089 energy were used. The cross sections show structure M037200100090 in the region of the giant resonance and fall off M037200100091 smoothly towards higher energies. In the giant M037200100092 resonance region recent 1P-1H calculations are in M037200100093 poor agreement with these measurements except for one M037200100094 calculation for carbon6 which included low lying M037200100095 excited states of the residual mass-11 system. The M037200100096 cross section in the intermediate region (40 to 140 M037200100097 MeV) can be described by the quasideuteron model with M037200100098 the density of deuteron-like structures taken as M037200100099 8nz/a.The moments of the measured cross sections are M037200100100 compared with sum rule predictions. The integral M037200100101 cross sections from 10 MeV up to the meson production M037200100102 threshold (140 MeV) exceeded the classical dipole sum M037200100103 by a factor of 1.4 to 2.
