The giant dipole resonance is M036900100013 resolved into three strong peaks below 21 MeV and at M036900100014 least two broader resonances at higher excitations. M036900100015 This structure is consistent with earlier M036900100016 measurements of poorer resolution and shows a M036900100017 correlation with the recent calculations of Schmidt M036900100018 and Do Dang. Comparisons with high-resolution M036900100019 neutron tome-of-flight and electron scattering data M036900100020 indicate the existence of regions of structure, M036900100021 roughly 2 - 3 MeV wide, which exhibit localised M036900100022 characteristics related to the excitation M036900100023 mechanisms. The role of deformation and M036900100024 configuration splitting effects in the cross section M036900100025 is discussed and possible directions of further study M036900100026 are noted which might clarify the situation more M036900100027 fully. M036900100028 CORRECTION The experimental reaction yield curve data have been M036900100029 corrected for background (it amounted to 28 % of the M036900100030 total yield at 20 MeV and 15 % at 26 MeV).
