M030000100007 ANALYSIS The approach used to evaluate the cross sections is M030000100008 based on the assumption that the systematic M030000100009 differences in experiments have a much weaker effect M030000100010 on the general characteristics of the cross sections M030000100011 such as the integrated cross sections and the M030000100012 centres of gravity as compared with the individual M030000100013 values of cross sections. Using the data for 238U in M030000100014 the nearbarrier energy range (E(gamma) = 5-8 MeV), M030000100015 it was shown that while the average total error in M030000100016 the weighted-mean cross section is about 30%, the M030000100017 average total error in the integrated weighted-mean M030000100018 cross section is 1-2%. Similar estimates are made M030000100019 for other energy ranges as well in the case of M030000100020 235,238U and other nuclei. The main principles of M030000100021 the cross section evaluation algorithm are briefly: M030000100022 - the data are selected which are obtained by M030000100023 reliable techniques and for which the absolute M030000100024 values (or the methods of their estimation), the M030000100025 statistical errors are given (or estimated); M030000100026 - using the statistical criteria, the data are M030000100027 selected whose integrated cross sections and M030000100028 centres of gravity do not differ greatly from the M030000100029 weightedmean values; M030000100030 - when the iterative procedure of renormalization M030000100031 (correction of the scale in the cross section M030000100032 axis) and recalibration (correction of the scale M030000100033 in energy axis) are used, the data are reduced to M030000100034 the form of the best agreement of the general M030000100035 characteristics; in this case the consistency of M030000100036 He data is controlled by using the generalized M030000100037 criteria of chi**2; the procedure is being done M030000100038 till one of the following conditions begins to Be M030000100039 fulfilled: M030000100040 1) the data distribution begins to correspond to M030000100041 their individual errors and M030000100042 r**2=chi**2/(K-n)=1, where (K-n) is the number M030000100043 of degrees of freedom; M030000100044 2) the integrated cross section and the centre of M030000100045 gravity of the corrected weighted-mean cross M030000100046 section begins to decrease from the initial M030000100047 value by more than 1 root-mean-square error; M030000100048 3) the parameter r**2 decrease rate becomes < 1%; M030000100049 - the values of the renormalized and recalibrated M030000100050 cross sections are combined into a single set M030000100051 whose values at every point is checked for M030000100052 consistency with the other (the values providing M030000100053 anomalously large contribution to the total chi**2 M030000100054 sum are discarded); M030000100055 - the set of the values that have satisfied all the M030000100056 selections and its errors by means of reduction M030000100057 method.
