L024500100022 METHOD (TOF) The measurement of the cross section and L024500100023 neutron angular distributions was carried out using L024500100024 the photoneutron time-of-flight angular distribution L024500100025 facility. Samples of D20 and H20 were used to monitor L024500100026 and measure the photon distribution. For each of the L024500100027 samples used, eight neutron time-of flight spectra L024500100028 were recorded simultaneously, using 10 m flight paths L024500100029 spread over an angular span from 48 to 139 degrees in L024500100030 13 degree steps. L024500100031 ANALYSIS The reduction of data from the series of L024500100032 photoneutron time-of-flight spectra to yield a total L024500100033 ground-state cross section and the anisotropy L024500100034 coefficients was accomplished by the following steps. L024500100035 Initial corrections for dead time and natural and L024500100036 sample background were performed on the L024500100037 time-of-flight spectra before they were converted L024500100038 into neutron energy spectra in the center-of-mass L024500100039 frame. The neutron energy spectra were then corrected L024500100040 for detector efficiency and converted to the L024500100041 excitation energy scale. Legendre polynomials up to L024500100042 second order were fitted to these energy spectra and L024500100043 the normalized angular distribution coefficients. The L024500100044 coefficients were extracted as functions of L024500100045 excitation energy using a weighted least-squares L024500100046 technique. The total angle-integrated cross section L024500100047 was obtained by dividing 4pi A0 by the (measured) L024500100048 bremsstrahlung distribution scaled to the relative L024500100049 number of nuclei of 14C and H exposed to the photon L024500100050 beam. The scale of the cross section was determined L024500100051 relative to the deuterium cross section.
