L016700100013 SAMPLE High-pressure 4He-Xe gas scintillators with total L016700100014 pressure of 51 atm was used both as target and the L016700100015 detector. L016700100016 DETECTOR (SCIN) High-pressure 4He-Xe gas scintillation L016700100017 detector with total pressure of 51 atm was used. L016700100018 Scintillator was filled in 5.1 cm diameter L016700100019 cylindrical stainless steel vessels of 0.1 cm wall L016700100020 thickness. Efficiency of noble gas scintillators for L016700100021 detecting charged particles is known to be 1.0.To L016700100022 limit the wall effects, the proton range was kept L016700100023 lower than 1.5 cm. The Xe concentration was therefore L016700100024 varied from 7% to 47% while keeping the total pressure L016700100025 at 51 atm. L016700100026 INC-SOURCE (LCS) Photons were produced via Compton L016700100027 backscattering of free-electron laser (FEL) photons L016700100028 from relativistic electrons in one of the two L016700100029 straight sections of electron storage ring. The L016700100030 electron energies were varied between 650 and 750 MeV L016700100031 and the FEL wavelength was changed between 350 and L016700100032 400 nm to cover the gamma ray energy range between L016700100033 22.0 and 29.5 MeV.
