L005500100026 Because the energy spectrum of the annihilation-plus- L005500100027 Bremsstrahlung radiation differs from that of purely L005500100028 Bremsstrahlung photons, a measured correction was L005500100029 applied to the ion-chamber (beam monitor) response to L005500100030 normalize the electron data to the positron data. L005500100031 The normalized electron data then were substracted fromL005500100032 the positron data, leaving the neutron counts which L005500100033 result only from the annihilation radiation. L005500100034 The measured sample-blank data, normalized to equal L005500100035 photon flux, were substracted from the target data to L005500100036 give the net target results. L005500100037 After a small correction for the neutron multiplicity L005500100038 in each ring, the data were corrected for the energy- L005500100039 dependent efficiency of the neutron detector using theL005500100040 ring-ratio result for each energy. L005500100041 The data were converted to photoneutron cross sections L005500100042 by applying the measured ion-chamber response per L005500100043 photon, the known number of target nuclei in the beam,L005500100044 and a small correction for the photon attenuation in L005500100045 the sample. L005500100046 A multiplicity analysis of the number of neutrons L005500100047 recordered in each beam burst allows the (gamma,n) andL005500100048 (gamma,2n) yields to be extracted simultaneously and L005500100049 independently. L005500100050 CORRECTION Corrected for: L005500100051 - pileup of counts in the detector, L005500100052 - ion-chamber response to electron and positron L005500100053 produced radiation, L005500100054 - neutron multiplicities in each ring, L005500100055 - for photon attenuation in the sample, L005500100056 - silicon and silicon dioxide sample masses. L005500100057 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR2) Systematic uncertainty resulting from the L005500100058 oxygen normalization was estimated to be less than 2%.L005500100059 COMMENT The giant dipole resonances for 28Si and 30Si exhibit L005500100060 appreciable fragmentation; that for 29Si does not. L005500100061 The (gamma,2n) cross section for 30Si is large; for L005500100062 29Si it is consistent with zero. L005500100063 The (gamma,1n) cross section for 30Si decreases sharplyL005500100064 with energy to values near zero as the (gamma,2n) L005500100065 cross section grows, then increases to appreciable L005500100066 values as the (gamma,2n) cross section diminishes; L005500100067 this extreme behavior, although never seen befor, is L005500100068 attributable to the competition between the (gamma,n) L005500100069 (gamma,2n), and (gamma,n+p) decay channels. L005500100070 Some properties of the isospin components of the giant L005500100071 resonance are inferred. L005500100072 Other features of the data, including the integrated L005500100073 cross sections, are found to be similar in many L005500100074 respects to corresponding results for oxygen and L005500100075 magnesium isotopes. The 28Si nucleus is found to be L005500100076 a better 'core' for 29Si and 30Si than might have ben L005500100077 expected from previous descriptions of its open-shell L005500100078 character.
