L005000100024 The effective neutron detection system permits direct, L005000100025 separate and simultaneous measurements of the partial L005000100026 cross sections: (gamma,n)+(gamma,np), (gamma,2n), etc L005000100027 CORRECTION After the recorded neutron events were corrected for L005000100028 pileup in the detector, the neutron backgrounds L005000100029 (annihilation target removed) were substracted for L005000100030 both the positron and electron measurements. L005000100031 Because the energy spectrum of the annihilation-plus- L005000100032 Bremsstrahlung radiation differs from that of purely L005000100033 Bremsstrahlung photons, a measured correction was L005000100034 applied to the ion-chamber (beam monitor) response to L005000100035 normalize the electron data to the positron data. L005000100036 Multiplication effects in the samples were determined L005000100037 both by Monte Carlo calculations and by measurements L005000100038 with samples wrapped in thin cadmium metal foil; such L005000100039 effects necessitated small corrections to the data of L005000100040 5, 2, 1, and 0.5% for U235, U236, U238, and Th232, L005000100041 respectively. uncertainties resulting from these L005000100042 corrections are estimated to be less than 1% in all L005000100043 cases. L005000100044 ANALYSIS The normalized electron data then were substracted fro L005000100045 the positron data, leaving the neutron counts which L005000100046 result only from the annihilation radiation. L005000100047 The measured sample-blank data, normalized to equal L005000100048 photon flux, were substracted from the target data to L005000100049 give the net target results. L005000100050 After a small correction for the neutron multiplicity L005000100051 in each ring, the data were corrected for the energy- L005000100052 dependent efficiency of the neutron detector using th L005000100053 ring-ratio result for each energy. L005000100054 The data were converted to photoneutron cross sections L005000100055 by applying the measured ion-chamber response per L005000100056 photon, the known number of target nuclei in the beam L005000100057 and a small correction for the photon attenuation in L005000100058 the sample.
