L004800100011 SAMPLE Sample consisted of a 25.4-mm diameter cylinder of L004800100012 pressed carbon powder, enriched to 95.9% 13C. L004800100013 DETECTOR (BF3) 48 high-pressure BF3 tubes arranged in four L004800100014 concentric rings of twelve tubes each and placed into L004800100015 paraffin. L004800100016 METHOD (EXTB,RINGR) Direct photoneutron detection. L004800100017 Ring-ratio neutron multiplicity measurement. L004800100018 The effective neutron detection system permits direct, L004800100019 separate and simultaneous measurements of the partial L004800100020 cross sections (gamma,n)+(gamma,np), (gamma,2n), etc. L004800100021 ANALYSIS After the recorded neutron events were corrected for L004800100022 pileup in the detector, the neutron backgrounds L004800100023 (annihilation target removed) were substracted for L004800100024 both the positron and electron measurements. L004800100025 Because the energy spectrum of the annihilation-plus- L004800100026 Bremsstrahlung radiation differs from that of purely L004800100027 Bremsstrahlung photons, a measured correction was L004800100028 applied to the ion-chamber (beam monitor) response to L004800100029 normalize the electron data to the positron data. L004800100030 The normalized electron data then were substracted fromL004800100031 the positron data, leaving the neutron counts which L004800100032 result only from the annihilation radiation. L004800100033 The measured sample-blank data, normalized to equal L004800100034 photon flux, were substracted from the target data to L004800100035 give the net target results. L004800100036 After a small correction for the neutron multiplicity L004800100037 in each ring, the data were corrected for the energy- L004800100038 dependent efficiency of the neutron detector using theL004800100039 ring-ratio result for each energy. L004800100040 The data were then converted to photoneutron cross L004800100041 sections by applying the measured ion-chamber responseL004800100042 per photon, the known number of target nuclei in the L004800100043 beam, and a small correction for the photon L004800100044 attenuation in the sample. L004800100045 CORRECTION The corrections were made for: L004800100046 - ion-chamber (beam monitor) response since the energy L004800100047 distribution of the annihilation-plus-Bremsstrahlung L004800100048 radiation differs from purely Bremsstrahlung photons L004800100049 (less than 4%); L004800100050 - pileup of counts in the detector; L004800100051 - efficiency of the neutron detector. L004800100052 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) Statistical errors only. L004800100053 Systematic error due to uncertainty in photon-flux L004800100054 calibration was estimated to be about 6% below 30 MeV L004800100055 and slightly larger at highest energies. The error L004800100056 produced by procedure of correction of neutron L004800100057 multiplicity in each ring was estimated to be about 2%L004800100058 at low neutron energies and about 10% at highest L004800100059 neutron energies. L004800100060 COMMENT Several sharp features below the giant resonance were L004800100061 distinguished. L004800100062 The results both for this 'pygmy-resonance' region and L004800100063 for the giant resonance near 24 MeV differ markedly L004800100064 from previously reported measurements and provide a L004800100065 much better quantitative comparison with recent L004800100066 theoretical calculations of the photoneutron reaction L004800100067 in 13C. L004800100068 Comparison of the measured total photoneutron cross L004800100069 section with recent data on the ground-state L004800100070 photoreaction and with average photoneutron energies L004800100071 provides evidence for the isospin splitting of the L004800100072 giant resonance for this nucleus.
