L004600100026 The measured sample-blank data, normalized to equal L004600100027 photon flux, were substracted from the target data to L004600100028 give the net target results. L004600100029 After a small correction for the neutron multiplicity L004600100030 in each ring, the data were corrected for the energy- L004600100031 dependent efficiency of the neutron detector using theL004600100032 ring-ratio result for each energy. L004600100033 ANALYSIS The data were converted to photoneutron cross sections L004600100034 by applying the measured ion-chamber response per L004600100035 photon, the known number of target nuclei in the beam L004600100036 and a small correction for the photon attenuation in L004600100037 the sample. L004600100038 Since the (gamma,p) contribution for medium and heavy L004600100039 nuclei can be neglected the total photoneutron L004600100040 absorption cross section, (gamma,abs) = (gamma,n) + L004600100041 (gamma,n+p) + (gamma,2n) can be obtained. L004600100042 Used the ring-ratio technique, whereby the average L004600100043 energy for the photoejected neutrons determined for L004600100044 each data point, has been extended to include triple- L004600100045 photoneutron events as well as single- and double- L004600100046 photoneutron events. These energies serve to determineL004600100047 the neutron detector efficiencies necessary to computeL004600100048 the (gamma,1n), (gamma,2n), and (gamma,3n) cross L004600100049 sections individually. L004600100050 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) Statistical errors only. L004600100051 Systematic uncertainties due to isotope impurities in L004600100052 the targets were estimated to be about 7% for all L004600100053 targets with the exception of 186Os which is about 10%L004600100054 Although the fractional uncertainties involved in the L004600100055 various partial cross sections might become L004600100056 appreciable in those energy regions where those cross L004600100057 sections themselves are small (such as for (gamma,1n),L004600100058 cross sections a few MeV above the (gamma,2n) L004600100059 thresholds) owing to the statistical nature of ring- L004600100060 ratio data, the overall uncertainty in the total L004600100061 photoneutron cross section (gamma,n-i) is not much L004600100062 worsened by the imperfect knowledge of the detector L004600100063 efficiency. L004600100064 Thus, while the absolute cross sections have been L004600100065 determined with an accuracy of about 7%, the relative L004600100066 precision of the cross section measurements between L004600100067 different osmium isotopes is far better (2 - 3%). L004600100068 ADD-RES Information extracted from the data includes L004600100069 parameters of the giant dipole and quadrupole L004600100070 resonances, integrated cross sections and their L004600100071 moments, nuclear symmetry energies, and nuclear L004600100072 deformation parameters and intrinsic quadrupole L004600100073 moments. L004600100074 COMMENT No fewer than eight kinds of evidence point to a suddenL004600100075 change of behavior between 189Os and 190Os, which L004600100076 could be interpreted as a phase transition from a L004600100077 statically deformed prolate nucleus to a gamma- L004600100078 unstable one, in general (but not detailed) agreement L004600100079 with the prediction of a dynamic-collective-model L004600100080 calculation.
