C306200100022 SAMPLE (6-C-13,ENR=0.99) The 13C target, produced by Arizona C306200100023 Carbon Foil, Inc. via electron-beam evaporation of C306200100024 carbon enriched to >99% 13C onto a copper substrate, C306200100025 was determined to have a 13C thickness (areal density) C306200100026 of nt = (1.12+-0.05)*10**18 atoms/cm2 via alpha- C306200100027 elastic scattering, alpha energy-loss measurements, andC306200100028 a scan of the 1.053 MeV 13C(alpha,n) resonance. C306200100029 METHOD The beam passed through a 0.5-cm-diameter gold plated C306200100030 collimator located approximately 48 cm upstream of C306200100031 the target location and was impinged on a 13C target C306200100032 located on a gold-plated ladder at the center of the C306200100033 HeBGB moderator. The incident charge was measured by C306200100034 summing the beam current of the electrically isolated C306200100035 target ladder and target chamber within HeBGB. To C306200100036 ensure the entirety of the beam was on target, at C306200100037 each measurement energy the beam was first tuned C306200100038 through an empty frame in the target ladder and the C306200100039 integrated beam charge Qalpha was recorded using a C306200100040 downstream Faraday cup. At periodic energy spacings, C306200100041 measurements were performed on a copper substrate C306200100042 identical to the backing used for the 13C targets in C306200100043 order to as certain the neutron background. Neutrons C306200100044 were detected using the 3He and BF3 neutron-sensitive C306200100045 proportional counters. A pulser, adjusted to provide C306200100046 a signal outside of the neutron spectrum, was used to C306200100047 monitor the proportional counter deadtime and C306200100048 therefore the live fraction flive of the data C306200100049 acquisition. C306200100050 ANALYSIS In order to calculate the energy at the center of the C306200100051 target, for which we report a cross section, stopping C306200100052 power based on the world data and commonly used C306200100053 theoretical stopping powers at these energies was C306200100054 employed, adopting the difference between the largest C306200100055 and smallest stopping powers for the stopping power C306200100056 uncertainty and the median of these extremes as the C306200100057 stopping power. The cross section at each energy is C306200100058 calculated according to the thin-target approximation, C306200100059 where the reported energy is the center-of-mass C306200100060 energy at the center of the target.
