The time-of- C305500100024 flight (TOF) between two scintillators placed at the C305500100025 exit of the A1900 and the entrance of the S800 C305500100026 spectrograph beam line (the S800 object point) was C305500100027 used to separate 14O from 13N (23%) and 12C (7%) C305500100028 contaminants on an event-by-event basis. C305500100029 DETECTOR (TPC,SCIN,IOCH) The ATTPC used for the first time C305500100030 with a fast rare-isotope beam, was filled with pure C305500100031 deuterium gas. The gas of the active volume was C305500100032 isolated from the beam line and S800 vacuum by C305500100033 12-microm-thick polyamide windows. The fragment C305500100034 identification was performed event by event using the C305500100035 TOF between scintillators at the S800 object point C305500100036 and at the focal plane of S800, and the energy loss C305500100037 of the fragments in an ionization chamber at the C305500100038 focal plane of S800. C305500100039 SAMPLE Pure deuterium gas at a pressure of 530 Torr (+-0.5%), C305500100040 corresponding to a thickness of 11.7 mg/cm2. C305500100041 METHOD (TOF,EDE) C305500100042 ANALYSIS The excitation energy of 14N produced after the C305500100043 14O(d,2He) reaction is reconstructed in three steps. C305500100044 First, the electron cloud produced by ionizing C305500100045 charged particles in the ATTPC is analyzed with C305500100046 pattern recognition and fitting routines to identify C305500100047 the (d,2He) events and extract the 2He momentum. The C305500100048 selection of (d,2He) events is ensured by the C305500100049 coincidence between an identified 14O ion in the beam, C305500100050 a relevant residual fragment in the S800, and two C305500100051 fitted tracks with a minimal distance smaller than C305500100052 2sigma of the minimal- distance distribution (<1 cm) C305500100053 in the beam region. The point of minimal distance C305500100054 defines the reaction vertex. The energy (deduced from C305500100055 the range) and angular resolutions of a single track C305500100056 are about 15 keV and 1.5 degree, respectively. The C305500100057 momentum vectors of the two protons are used to C305500100058 reconstruct the 2He momentum vector and, through an C305500100059 invariant-mass calculation, its internal energy. C305500100060 Finally, the excitation energy of 14N is obtained C305500100061 from a missing-mass calculation. C305500100062 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) The error bars in the data include C305500100063 statistical and systematic uncertainties. The latter C305500100064 are dominated by uncertainties in the acceptance C305500100065 corrections and beam intensity determination, but are C305500100066 relatively small compared to the statistical C305500100067 uncertainties, except for the state at 3.95 MeV, for C305500100068 which both types of uncertainty are comparable.
