The targets C285700100010 were mounted at 45 degrees to the incident beam in C285700100011 the center of a scattering chamber of 6-in. diameter C285700100012 which had ports of 0.25-in. diameter every 7.5 C285700100013 degrees. Ca-40 has 97% abundance, so using Ca-40 (as C285700100014 the authors did) can be justified, assuming that the C285700100015 minor isotopes would not make much difference. C285700100016 DETECTOR (CSICR) Protons from reactions in the target passed C285700100017 through thin aluminum foil and were detected in C285700100018 CsI(Tl) scintillation counters. C285700100019 METHOD Angular distributions were taken at 7.5 degree C285700100020 intervals using two counters which were carefully C285700100021 checked to have equal efficiencies. Excitation curves C285700100022 above 2.25 MeV were taken with four counters set at 0, C285700100023 45, 90, and 135 degrees to the incident beam. Below C285700100024 2.25 MeV, counters were set at 30, 90, and 150 C285700100025 degrees. The biases on the single-channel C285700100026 pulse-height analyzers used were checked periodically C285700100027 by comparison with a 256-channel pulse-height C285700100028 analyzer to be sure that only protons from the ground C285700100029 state of Ca41 were detected.
