C284400100010 DETECTOR Cloud chamber. C284400100011 METHOD In order to determine the ratio of the number of C284400100012 gamma-rays to the number of neutrons from the C284400100013 reaction, the target holder was placed directly C284400100014 within the cloud chamber and surrounded by a foil of C284400100015 Cellophane 0.1 mm thick. From the number of proton C284400100016 tracks coming from this foil the neutron intensity C284400100017 could be estimated using the known cross section for C284400100018 neutron-proton scattering. The gamma-ray intensity C284400100019 was determined simultaneously by counting the Compton C284400100020 electrons produced in a sheet of carbon in the center C284400100021 of the chamber. From the ratio of Compton electrons C284400100022 to protons obtained in this way it was calculated C284400100023 that there is not more than one gamma-ray for every C284400100024 200 neutrons. Authors argue that they must be due to C284400300006 neutrons, "possibly" from the T(d,n) He-4 reaction. C284400300007 In fact, it is a first observation of 14 MeV neutrons C284400300008 for D-D reactions. C284400300009 STATUS (TABLE) page 308 of J,PR,54,308,1938.
