C260700100009 INC-SPECT The deuterons produced by the cyclotron have C260700100010 a maximum energy of 190 MeV, and a beam of about C260700100011 10**-6-amp average current can be obtained. The C260700100012 protons have a maximum energy of 340 MeV and can be C260700100013 produced with an average beam current of the order of C260700100014 5*10**-7 amp. C260700100015 DETECTOR (FISCH,GEMUC) Bi fission chamber. C260700100016 METHOD Bismuth fission chambers were used to detect the high C260700100017 energy neutrons. Graphite monitors were used to C260700100018 determine the fluxes of protons or deuterons C260700100019 traversing the targets. The monitors were attached to C260700100020 the target so that the beam passed, simultaneously, C260700100021 through both target and monitor. At the end of the C260700100022 bombardment the monitor was removed and the counting C260700100023 rate of the C11 activity in it was determined on a C260700100024 Geiger-Mueller counter at a suitable later time. C260700100025 Sometimes decay curves were taken through an aluminum C260700100026 absorber so that the positron annihilation radiation C260700100027 of the C11 was counted instead of the positrons C260700100028 themselves. C260700100029 ANALYSIS (DECAY) C260700100030 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) The relative neutron yield from a given C260700100031 element was obtained by comparison of its corrected C260700100032 neutron yield to the yield from a standard carbon C260700100033 target. The estimated probable error of a single C260700100034 determination of such a ratio is about 10 percent. C260700100035 This error arises mainly in the determination of the C260700100036 flux of deuterons or protons traversing a target, but C260700100037 also has contributions from the neutron counting C260700100038 statistics and from the correction made for the C260700100039 production of neutrons in the carbon monitors. The C260700100040 errors in measurements of the thicknesses and C260700100041 densities of the targets are negligible. C260700100042 CORRECTION For each of the four targets used in a given run, the C260700100043 neutron counting rate was determined and corrected C260700100044 for the neutrons produced in the monitors and the C260700100045 relative neutron yields for the four targets were C260700100046 calculated.
