C253900100011 DETECTOR (GELI) C253900100012 METHOD (EXTB,GSPEC) An external beam of 20Ne was delivered C253900100013 to a 1 m air gap by the BEVALAC at the Lawrence C253900100014 Berkeley Laboratory. Two separate irradiations were C253900100015 performed, one of the gold foils and one of the C253900100016 tantalum foil. Gamma-ray spectrometric measurements C253900100017 were made with a single Ge(Li) detector on 5-10 cm2 C253900100018 area pieces cut from the irradiated target foils, C253900100019 which were centered on the beam spot. These C253900100020 measurements began 20 min after the end of bombardment C253900100021 (EOB) for the gold targets, 14 h after EOB for the C253900100022 tantalum target, and continued essentially C253900100023 uninterrupted for 40 d. The irradiated target C253900100024 materials provided strong radioactive sources which C253900100025 allowed measurement in low geometries where C253900100026 gamma-gamma summing losses had been measured to be C253900100027 small. C253900100028 ANALYSIS (DECAY) After the gamma-ray measurements were C253900100029 completed the spectra were analyzed, decay curves are C253900100030 then identified interactively by their gamma-ray C253900100031 energy and halflife with the code TAU2. Multiple C253900100032 assignments are made to the decay curves at this C253900100033 point if the assignment based on the combination of C253900100034 half-life and gamma-ray energy is ambiguous. Off line, C253900100035 all the assignments are screened to remove multiple C253900100036 assignments and ensure that the gamma rays for each C253900100037 isotope were observed with the proper abundances C253900100038 (i.e., no transition stronger than the observed C253900100039 transition can be missing). The cross section is C253900100040 then calculated from the statistically weighted C253900100041 average of the observed gamma-ray transitions for C253900100042 each isotope. C253900100043 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) Using a propagation of errors treatment, C253900100044 one estimates that on the average, individual points C253900100045 in the mass yield curve have a systematic uncertainty C253900100046 of -+30% which would be added quadratically to the C253900100047 error in the measured value. C253900100048 (ERR-SYS) Systematic uncertainty C253900100049 CORRECTION The cross section calculation includes corrections C253900100050 for a nonuniform beam level during the irradiation.
