A surface layer of C253300100014 uranium oxide was removed from each foil prior to C253300100015 irradiation by etching it with cold concentrated HNO3, C253300100016 under argon atmosphere. The stack of etched metal C253300100017 foils was clamped against a water-cooled copper block C253300100018 inside a Faraday cup connected to a current C253300100019 integrator which permitted the recording of the beam C253300100020 intensity and the total charge collected. C253300100023 METHOD (CHSEP,GSPEC,ACTIV) The target foils were irradiated C253300100024 with 40Ar+13 beams of 288 MeV, beam diameter <12 mm, C253300100025 with intensities of several hundred nA, typically for 1C253300100026 or 2 h. After irradiation the first uranium foil was C253300100027 quickly counted without chemical separation to C253300100028 identify short-lived isotopes (e.g. , 239U, 41Ar, C253300100029 38,39Cl, and 107Rh) via prominent gamma-ray peaks C253300100030 that could be unambiguously identified in the complex C253300100031 gamma-ray spectra. Afterwards this foil was dissolved C253300100032 and separated into several chemical fractions. C253300100033 ANALYSIS (DECAY) C253300100034 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-T) The estimated errors in computing the C253300100035 absolute values of the cross sections are +4% for the C253300100036 counting efficiency and +3% for the chemical yield.
