C252800100008 INC-SOURCE A deuteron beam of about 2 microA/cm2. C252800100009 DETECTOR (GEMUC,IOCH) C252800100010 METHOD (EXTB,CHSEP,ASPEC) The essential need in this C252800100011 research was for a process for the separation and C252800100012 purification of neptunium which would be much more C252800100013 rapid than any devised hitherto, since the objective C252800100014 was the identification of isotopes believed to be C252800100015 short-lived. This need was fulfilled largely by C252800100016 modification of the mechanics of previously known C252800100017 chemical separation processes. The most rapid C252800100018 isolations from the target required only 45 min., but C252800100019 some sacrifice in purity resulted. The methods C252800100020 described here required, on the average, from an hour C252800100021 to an hour and a half. Neptunium was isolated from C252800100022 all other radioactive species by combinations of C252800100023 co-precipitation and solvent extraction techniques. C252800100024 Samples for radioactive assay were mounted on C252800100025 platinum plates of 2-mil thickness. A uniform C252800100026 geometrical arrangement was used for all Geiger C252800100027 counter activity measurements. Alpha-particle C252800100028 activity was assayed in "50 percent geometry" C252800100029 argon-filled ionization chambers. The determination C252800100030 of alpha-particle energies and analysis of mixtures C252800100031 of alpha-emitting isotopes were made in a 48-channel C252800100032 ionization pulse analyzer in which the energy range C252800100033 covered by the 48 channels could be varied.
