The beam C252500100013 striking the target was measured by means of a C252500100014 current integrator having an accuracy of a few percent.C252500100015 SAMPLE (5-B-10,ENR=0.95) Two types of targets were used: one C252500100016 consisted of a thin layer of (B10)2O3 evaporated in C252500100017 vacuo on a tantalum backing; the other was a thin C252500100018 boron layer prepared by cracking diborane on hot C252500100019 tantalum. In both of these the boron was enriched to C252500100020 about 95% B10. The number of B10 nuclei per cm2 C252500100021 in these targets was determined by comparing the C252500100022 yield of the B10(p,alpha gamma)Be7 reaction from the C252500100023 various targets with the yield from a target of C252500100024 normal B203. The thickness of this target had C252500100025 previously been measured from the apparent width of C252500100026 the 163-keV resonance of B11(p,gamma)C12 from the C252500100027 target thickness the number of boron nuclei per cm2 C252500100028 was then calculated by using the stopping cross C252500100029 section of B203. C252500100030 DETECTOR (NAICR) The scintillation spectrometer consisted of C252500100031 an Nal(T1) crystal 1.5, inches long and 1.5, inches C252500100032 in diameter mounted on a 5819 photomultiplier. Pulses C252500100033 from the photomultiplier were amplified and then C252500100034 analyzed in a single-channel pulse-height analyzer.
