C239300100007 INSTITUTE (1USAWES,1USAPUP) C239300100008 FACILITY (CYCLO,1USAPUP) C239300100009 SAMPLE Forty 0.00025-in. thick (~10 mg/cm2) Ta foils. C239300100010 METHOD (ACTIV,STTA,CHSEP) The excitation function of C239300100011 Ta181(d,p)Ta182 was measured by the well-known stack C239300100012 foil technique. Ta foils were bombarded with the C239300100013 deuteron beam from the University of Pittsburgh C239300100014 cyclotron. The energy of the deuteron beam was C239300100015 measured by its range in air to be 15.0 MeV. To C239300100016 evaluate the absolute cross section, two 0.0003-in. C239300100017 aluminum foils were added to the stack. Since the C239300100018 excitation function of Al27(d,p alpha)Na24 is known, C239300100019 the relative yield of Na24 in Al foil to Ta182 in Ta C239300100020 foil provides a measure of the absolute cross section C239300100021 for the Ta reaction. When Ta181 foils were bombarded C239300100022 with deuterons, three activities, with half-lives C239300100023 16.3 min, 115 days, and 8.2 hours, were observed. C239300100024 About 5 days after bombardment, however, only the C239300100025 115-day activity remained. An hour after the deuteron C239300100026 bombardment, and up to a few days later, only one C239300100027 activity with a 15-hour half-period was observed in C239300100028 the Al foils. The relative excitation function of the C239300100029 115-day Tai182 and also the relative thick target C239300100030 yield were thus obtained. By using 0.028 barn as the C239300100031 extrapolated cross section value for 15.0-MeV C239300100032 deuterons for the reaction Al27(d,p alpha)Na24 after C239300100033 Clarke, it was found that the cross section for 15.0- C239300100034 MeV deuterons from the reaction on Ta181(d,p)Ta182 C239300100035 was 0.5 barn. The cross sections at other deuteron C239300100036 energies can be obtained from these values shown in C239300100037 Fig. 1.
