C236200100013 SAMPLE The target consisted of a self-supporting carbon film C236200100014 mounted on a tantalum ring. The angle that the plane C236200100015 of the target made with the beam could be measured C236200100016 and adjusted at will. Target thickness was measured C236200100017 by considering the Coulomb scattering at 1.5-MeV C236200100018 bombarding energy, and it was determined to be 40 C236200100019 microg/cm2 which corresponds approximately to a C236200100020 proton energy loss of 2.8 keV at 5 MeV. A small C236200100021 amount of hydrogen and oxygen contamination was C236200100022 present. C236200100023 METHOD The gamma rays were observed in a cylindrical C236200100024 aluminum scattering chamber, 9 in. in diameter and C236200100025 6.5 in. high. The construction of 3/8-in. thick walls C236200100026 of the chamber was such that the absorption of gamma C236200100027 rays was independent of the angle of observation, C236200100028 Carbon targets on thick backings were mounted on an C236200100029 electrically insulated post which passed through a C236200100030 rotating vacuum seal centrally located in the bottom C236200100031 of the chamber. Thus the targets were insulated from C236200100032 the rest of the chamber and were used to collect beam C236200100033 charge and provide a measure of the number of C236200100034 incident protons. The chamber entrance pipe contained C236200100035 the beam collimator together with the collimator C236200100036 scattering suppressor.
