C235700100008 INSTITUTE (1USABRK,1USABNL) C235700100009 FACILITY (SYNCH,1USABNL) Brookhaven Cosmotron and AGS. C235700100010 SAMPLE A target stack consisted of a 0.001-in. Al target foil C235700100011 (99.99% pure) and three 0.00025-in. C235700100012 DETECTOR (NAICR) 3x3-in. NaI crystals. C235700100013 METHOD (ACTIV,CHSEP) The irradiations were performed at the C235700100014 Brookhaven Cosmotron and AGS, and at the latter C235700100015 machine it was necessary to reduce the beam intensity C235700100016 to prevent the burning of the plastic foils. The C235700100017 irradiations sometimes lasted as long as 20 min, but C235700100018 corrections were made for the variation of the beam C235700100019 intensity during the bombardments. The Mg27 was C235700100020 separated chemically from the target and catcher C235700100021 foils, and the main problem was eliminating the C235700100022 tremendous quantities of C11 activity induced in the C235700100023 plastic foils. This was accomplished by fuming off C235700100024 the carbon with perchloric acid. The other C235700100025 interfering activities, F18 and Na24, were eliminated C235700100026 with holdback carriers. The samples were mounted on C235700100027 Al cards of sufficient thickness to stop the beta C235700100028 particles and assayed on NaI crystals. C235700100029 CORRECTION Data were corrected for the secondary reaction and C235700100030 scattering. C235700100031 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) The following errors were not folded into C235700100032 errors for sigma: 7% uncertainty of the monitor cross C235700100033 sections, the error in the blank subtraction and that C235700100034 due to the counting statistics. C235700100035 (ERR-1) Mg chemical yields. C235700100036 (ERR-2) Intercalibration of the counters with the C235700100037 Mn54 source. C235700100038 (ERR-3) Na chemical yields. C235700100039 (ERR-4) Determination of the Na24 activity. C235700100040 (ERR-5) Uncertainty in the efficiency of the well C235700100041 counter for Na24.
