C194200100011 DETECTOR (PROPC) C194200100012 METHOD The beam of bombarding protons from the electrostatic C194200100013 accelerator entered the target volume through a C194200100014 0.015-mil Ni isolation foil and left the target C194200100015 volume through a 0.25-mil Mylar foil, where it was C194200100016 then collected in a well-evacuated Faraday cup which C194200100017 was electrically and magnetically biased so that loss C194200100018 of secondary electrons would not interfere in the C194200100019 measurement of the collected charge. The slit system C194200100020 of the proportional counter defined a small volume at C194200100021 the center of the chamber which was traversed by the C194200100022 well-collimated incident beam, and the pencils of C194200100023 particle trajectories for any scattering angle from C194200100024 17 to 163 degrees could, in turn, be studied. Pulses C194200100025 from the proportional counter were amplified and then C194200100026 scaled on a 10-channel pulse-height discriminator. C194200100027 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-T) The final errors in the absolute cross C194200100028 sections were about +-6%; the main source of error was C194200100029 from the counting statistics associated with each C194200100030 point. Other sources of error were: uncertainty as to C194200100031 the amount of 13C in the methane, +-1%; errors in the C194200100032 target pressure readings, +-1%; uncertainties in the C194200100033 knowledge of the number of protons that had passed C194200100034 through the target volume, +-0.5%, and uncertainties C194200100035 in the geometry of the scattering chamber, +-0.5%. C194200100036 (ERR-1) Amount of 13C in methane (1%) C194200100037 (ERR-2) Target pressure (1%) C194200100038 (ERR-3) Number of passing protons (0.5%) C194200100039 (ERR-4) Chamber geometry (0.5%) C194200100040 CORRECTION In order to determine the energy of the proton beam C194200100041 at the target volume, corrections for energy loss in C194200100042 intervening materials had to be made. The error in C194200100043 the absolute energy was about +-20 keV; principally, C194200100044 this error came from the measurement of the rate at C194200100045 which protons lost energy in the target gas.
