METHOD (EXTB,COINC) The cross sections are measured by C121100100009
counting the number of protons entering the target and C121100100010
then counting the number of protons leaving the target C121100100011
which have not lost energy in an inelastic collision. C121100100012
DETECTOR (TELES,SCIN,SCIN) The first two counters use plastic C121100100013
scintillators and are discs 1.3 cm in diam. by 0.64 cm C121100100014
thick. These counters, operated in coincidence, define C121100100015
a well collimated beam striking the target and serve asC121100100016
the beam monitor. C121100100017
Counters 3, 4 and 5 with the specially shaped brass C121100100018
absorbers comprise the energy analyzer and detector forC121100100019
elastically scattered protons. Counters 3, 4 and 5 are C121100100020
made with plastic scintillators and have a diameter C121100100021
of 6.98 cm, 15.2 cm and 20.3 cm, respectively, to C121100100022
accommodate the desired cut-off angle. C121100100023
SAMPLE Carbon, aluminium, copper, silver and lead, are C121100100024
made from commercially pure stock C121100100025
