Measurement of resonance spins. 1471200100020 SAMPLE (49-IN-115,ENR=0.999) We used two samples of natural 1471200100021 indium with n=2.88*10**23 atoms/cm2 and n=5.86*10**23 1471200100022 atoms/cm2, respectively. The measurements were 1471200100023 performed both at room temperature and at 77 K. A 1471200100024 75-g sample of indium, enriched to 99.9% in 115In, on 1471200100025 loan from the ORNL Isotope Pool, was used for spin 1471200100026 measurements. 1471200100027 DETECTOR (SCIN) The 10B-loaded liquid scintillation detector 1471200100028 is located 56.7 m from the neutron source. The 1471200100029 55-cell segmented detector can handle instantaneous 1471200100030 counting rates up to 9 MHz per cell with a dead time 1471200100031 of about 20 ns. The detector has an efficiency of 95%, 1471200100032 85%, and 71% at neutron energies of 10 eV, 100 eV, 1471200100033 and 1000 eV, respectively. 1471200100034 METHOD (TOF) The measurements were performed on flight path 1471200100035 2, which views a gadolinium-poisoned water moderator 1471200100036 and has a cadmium/ boron liner to reduce the number 1471200100037 of low-energy neutrons emerging in the tail of the 1471200100038 neutron pulse. After the moderator the neutrons are 1471200100039 collimated to a 10-cm-diam beam inside a 5-m-thick 1471200100040 biological shield. The neutrons then pass through a 1471200100041 3He/4He ion chamber system that acts as a flux 1471200100042 monitor. From the recorded indium data, 140 1471200200013 capture gamma-ray spectra corresponding to the TOF 1471200200014 intervals of indium resonances or background regions 1471200200015 were sorted. The orbital angular momentum l was 1471200200016 assigned by two indirect methods: one uses a Bayesian 1471200200017 probabilistic argument and the other uses the decay 1471200200018 properties of primary gamma rays.
