The targets were 1460400100016 prepared by vacuum evaporation of Pu feed material 1460400100017 which was ~87% 242Pu. 1460400100018 DETECTOR (SOLST) 1460400100019 METHOD (REC,COINC) The 242mAm fission isomer was produced 1460400100020 using the (t,3n) reaction on 242Pu. A 2-3 microA beam 1460400100021 of 17 MeV tritons from the LASL FN tandem Van de 1460400100022 Graaff impinged on a foil stack. The recoil reaction 1460400100023 products were thermalized in a He atmosphere which 1460400100024 had been partially passed over a container of water. 1460400100025 Coincident and single fission events were recorded 1460400100026 with the two solid state detectors and buffer stored 1460400100027 with the use of an on line SDS-930 computer. The 1460400100028 experiment was performed for ~3 days during which 1460400100029 time 41342 binary fission events were recorded. To 1460400100030 insure that the measured fission activity was from 1460400100031 the decay of 242mAm the half-life was measured by 1460400100032 pulsing the beam. 1460400100033 ANALYSIS The energies and masses of the coincident fission 1460400100034 fragments were obtained using the "mass defect" 1460400100035 calibration procedure.
