The 20-mu-g source was 1454900100011 covered with a 6.66-mg/cm2 aluminum foil and the 1454900100012 12-mu-g source with a 15.83-mg/cm2 gold foil. 1454900100013 Additional foils were added externally so that the 1454900100014 total foil thicknesses were 8.26-mg/cm2 of aluminum 1454900100015 and 24.75 mg/cm2 of gold,each sufficient to stop the 1454900100016 6.1i-MeV alpha particles produced in the natural 1454900100017 decay of 252Cf. 1454900100018 DETECTOR (TELES,SI,SILI) Telescope consisting of 3 (or 4) 1454900100019 phosphorous-diffused and/or lithium-drifted silicon 1454900100020 detectors, depending on the particles being studied 1454900100021 and the method of data collection. 1454900100022 The detectors were energy-calibrated by comparing a 1454900100023 precision pulse with the energy losses of alpha 1454900100024 particles from a 212Po-212Bi natural alpha source. The 1454900100025 uniformities and thicknesses of the thin detectors were1454900100026 determined by observing the energy loss profiles of 1454900100027 natural alpha particles and selected narrow energy 1454900100028 bands of long-range alpha particles and 6He particles 1454900100029 from 252Cf fission. 1454900100030 CORRECTION All measured energies were corrected for losses in the 1454900100031 air layer, the cover and external foils and the 1454900100032 detector dead layers. 1454900100033 METHOD (COINC) Three methods of taking data were used in the 1454900100034 course of this experiment: 1454900100035 Mode 1: To investigate relatively low-yield particles 1454900100036 in detail, the deltaE2, deltaE1, (deltaE2+deltaE1+E), 1454900100037 and particle identifier (PI) pulses were fed into a 1454900100038 4096-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC)-Buffer 1454900100039 system which was gated by the appropriate region of the1454900100040 PI spectrum. These four pulse heights were recorded in 1454900100041 an on-line computer and were later individually 1454900100042 analyzed using the known detector thicknesses and 1454900100043 range-energy relations in silicon for the particles of 1454900100044 interest. 1454900100045 Mode 2: To collect the energy spectra of the more 1454900100046 populous particles in their higher energy ranges, the 1454900100047 particle identifier output was fed to a four-channel 1454900100048 router. Four single-channel analyzers in the router 1454900100049 were set around the peaks of interest in the PI 1454900100050 spectrum and their outputs were used to route the 1454900100051 energy signals into the appropriate quadrants of a 1454900100052 4096-channel pulse-height analyzer. In this manner the 1454900100053 energy spectra of four particles could be collected 1454900100054 simultaneously.
